Adventures in Reading

"One benefit of summer was that each day we had more light to read by."
                                                                           —Jeannette Walls, The Glass Castle

I recall lazy summer days spent lying in the shade of a spreading maple tree,
my friends and I devouring The Happy Hollisters mystery books.
                                                                                                 —Rita Wechter

Memorial Day marks the unofficial beginning of summer, that season of travel and great summer reads.  This week in lieu of travel writing and photography, I submit links to book reviews by Vickie Bates—published on her blog No Bad Language.
As part of her 2012 Reading Challenge, Vickie has been posting monthly reading updates and she offers in-depth, thoughtful reviews of books she’s read so far this year.   Vickie’s reading selections—both fiction and non-fiction—reflect her interest in a wide variety of topics and subject matter.

Enjoy these informative reviews and, if you decide to travel to a destination you’ve read about on my blog, take one of these books along to keep you company.

  1. Rita, my wife (Cheri) is a librarian. I think she will find the links to Vickie's book reviews to be very useful. To better serve her patrons, she likes to read as many book reviews as possible so as to enable her to provide knowledgeable reading recommendations.

This was a terrific idea for a Blog posting!

  2. Thanks for your comments, John!

I'm so happy to hear that Cheri is a librarian. I'm a big fan of libraries; Vickie is also a library champion, as you'll notice when reading her blog.

    Happy summer reading!

  3. My goodness - "thank you" doesn't do justice to how honored I feel after reading this post. I'm so grateful to you and to your wonderful readers who've visited my blog. And how wonderful to create connections through a love of reading.

Speaking of which - "The Happy Hollisters" make another appearance! Sitting under a tree (or in a treehouse), reading this series as a youngster in New Hampshire, brings back such cheerful memories. How great that we had this in common decades before we ever knew each other!

    Thank you!

  4. Vickie, you're welcome. I'm happy to direct readers to your wonderful blog!

How nice that we share a history of adventuring with "The Happy Hollisters"! (All those years ago.) My twin sister still has the entire "Happy Hollister" collection at her house. Maybe I'll have to re-read an episode this summer.

I wish you a summer full of cheerful times in New Hampshire!

    Rita

    1. I might have to dig around my house in NH and see if I kept these books. I've only read six, but according to the Happy Hollisters entry on Wikipedia (oh, yes, there is!), there are more than 30 in the series. My favorite was "Mystery at Missile Town," which I read before the first manned Apollo mission.

Thank you for the good wishes. I hope you enjoy a lovely summer filled with great adventures - the real-life and the literary kind.
