Season's Greetings from One Day in America!Snowshoeing is one of my favorite outdoor activities and the mountains of southwestern Colorado provide a perfect venue for this winter sport.
The photos below tell the story of two recent treks in the San Juan Mountains.
Our dog, Annie, leads the way on a trail through the snowy spruce forest. |
Reaching the rim. |
Annie and I pose on a rocky outcrop with a killer view. Annie doesn't appreciate the view but she loves playing in the snow. |
Zoomed view from the above photo. Two of Colorado's 14,000 ft. peaks dominate the skyline: Uncompahgre (14308') on the right and Wetterhorn (14016') to the left. |
Another day of winter adventure dawns in the Colorado mountains. |

Hi Rita,
Well, first of all, it's great to read that you are out and about on snowshoes. Sounds like you have recovered from your injury of a few months ago.
Also, want to say that I'm extremely impressed with that beautiful zoomed view of Wetterhorn and Uncompahgre! After doing a bit of research, I was amazed to discover that for most strong hikers, it's possible to combine a climb of those two peaks as a day hike during cooperative summer weather conditions. Judging from the rugged appearance of those two peaks, that must be quite a trek!
Best wishes to you and Tim for a fun-filled holiday season!

Lovely photos, Rita!! I've loved seeing some of your winter photos when the flakes are still falling, but there's a lot to be said for that crisp, clear, clean air when the winter sun is shining - and how perfect the conditions are for photography.
Hope you're enjoying the winter months and have many more opportunities to strap on the snowshoes!
Hi Vickie,
I agree that blue sky, coupled with sun on snow can provide ideal conditions for winter photography.
I may have a chance to do more of that at the end of January when I travel to Bryce Canyon National Park. I say "may" because we haven't had any snow during the month of January. I understand that the state of California is in a drought right now. We're following the same path here in Utah.
Thanks so much for reading and commenting!
